NOSA U18 Boys Crowned Allstate Sugar Bowl State Cup Champions.
The U18 NOSA boys U18 squad were crowned LSA State Cup champions this past Sunday and earned a berth at the USYSA Region III championships in Raleigh, NC. The NOSA boys endured a marathon final match against Arsenal of Lafayette, which saw the game level at 0x0 in regulation time. Early in the first overtime period, NOSA senior, Luis Valledares put the boys ahead 1x0. Arsenal soon responded with an equalizer and the second overtime period saw the two sides level again at 1x1, requiring a penalty shootout to decide the title. Arsenal shot first and converted to go up 1x0. NOSA striker Scott Bergeron buried his penalty to put the shootout at 1x1. NOSA seniors Alex Lejuene and Troy Sehlinger both converted their penalty kicks to keep NOSA perfect, meanwhile, senior NOSA goalkeeper Butch Reeves saved Arsenal's 2nd, 3rd, and 4th penalty kicks, making it unecessary for NOSA to shoot their 4th and 5th penalty kicks and winning the match 3x1 in pk's.
On their march to the final victory, NOSA eliminated rival Lakeview 4x2 in the semifinal, the previous day. A far post header from David Ruiz put NOSA in front. A glorious run from behing from Julian Largaespada put NOSA back in front for a second time and was followed by another lead gaining goal from Josey Portillo from a direct free-kick. Jonathan Cabrera sealed Lakeview's fate for good with a late header skying over the rival keeper.
NOSA Director and U18 Head Coach Santo Rivas said of the tournament, " The squad is peaking at the perfect time. We have been evolving tactically, we are fit, healthy, and extremely motivated and confident. We have been able to out-think, and outlast our opponents and have scored some very spectacular goals. In the final penalty shootout we were perfect both from the spot and from the goal line. We are ready for the challenge that regionals will bring and relish the chance to go back on the road to play some of the best teams in the region. We have played some fantastic teams on both the west coast and the east coast all year and that is definitley in our favor going into the tournament. I'd like to thank the board, the U18 parents for all their support. I'd also like to thank Faizel Soekai and Rudy Bierhuizen for their previous work with the boys. They are also a very big part of this victory.
NOSA set to move into revamped traing/playing facility at UNO After a long hiatus on temporary field space, NOSA is happy to announce that it will be set to return, in May, to its previous soccer facility on the UNO Lakefront campus, where it will occupy two full-sized, professionally lit practice fields and two full size match fields.NOSA's official return to the campus also coincides with UNO's re-opening of the Keifer UNO Lakefront Arena in May. Here's what the NOSA Director, Santo Rivas had to say, "We are all very excited, not only for the club and the players, but for UNO as well. The re-opening of the arena and the fields marks the beginning of a new era for both NOSA and UNO. It also marks the beginning of a new and more professional relationship between NOSA and its partner UNO, which will eventually usher in some very exciting joint projects and allow NOSA players to benefit from new methods of teaching and coaching which will include video analysis, lecture, and even weight-training for older players."
